Mark was also an avid diver, and at the peak of his free-diving (breath hold diving) ability, represented the USA on the World Spearfishing Team in Mallorca, Spain. Mark's father, seeing major changes in the medical profession, advised him to "go into business, not medicine." Mark became a SCUBA instructor in San Diego, but as teaching SCUBA became less challenging, he discovered there was more money to be made as a commercial diver.
